O knihe

The purpose of studying civil conflict is to identify its causes: a better understanding of the circumstances that are conducive to civil conflict should enable governments and the international community to prevent it from erupting or at least from reoccurring. Ideally, and handled cautiously, our conclusions are pertinent from a policy point of view. It is beyond doubt that ethnicity matters in many civil conflicts. Therefore, although this study deals with civil conflict from a microeconomic perspective, each chapter comprises an aspect of (ethnic) mobilisation. Both the economic prerequisites for deliberate (ethnic) mobilisation to be successful and lucrative, and the most effective tools to prevent such mobilisation, are established. It is shown that predatory elites are likelier in resource-dependent economies while tropical agricultural commodity-dependent economies are vulnerable to (ethnic) mobilisation, and that a credible threat of an economic boycott is most effective in preventing (ethnic) polarisation. Finally, in order to safeguard countries from civil conflict, a structural diversification of the economic activity is strongly advocated.
