The AIDS epidemic continues to be one of the major challenges confronting developing nations. In Sub Saharan Africa (SSA), the incidence of AIDS has greatly increased the prevalence of orphan hood and vulnerability amongst children. It is estimated that in SSA alone, more than 12 million children have lost one or both parents as a result of AIDS. Government efforts alone have been unable to address the ensuing crisis. The region continues to receive considerable attention from international organizations towards addressing challenges ranging from pediatric AIDS, PMTCT, care and support for orphans and vulnerable children to scaling up on awareness raising and HIV prevention activities in a bid to reign in on the epidemic. To this end, multilateral agencies and international organizations are increasingly collaborating with local NGOs and communities to develop multi-sectoral mitigation strategies to address the challenges faced by vulnerable populations such as children. This study examines models of care and support of orphans and vulnerable children by international organizations collaborating with local community groups in Swaziland, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
