However, his reluctance soon gave way as he realizes that the journey will also lead him to information about his father, who was presumed dead. Banished into anonymity and leading an impoverished life because of his father's past, Wu Wei vows to seek the truth.
With the company of Liang Kang, a renowned pugilist with a burdened past, Lobsang, a young Tibetan warrior monk and Ruyi, a twelve-year-old runaway bride, Wu Wei sets out to complete his task - to deliver the scripture of an ancient Buddhist lineage to Mongolia.
However, the scroll is mistaken by the General of the imperial court as a coded letter sent by the rebels of Tibet to their cadres in Mongolia to overthrow the Qing ruler. The General is determined to quell the "unrest" by vanquishing Wu Wei and his friends and seizing the scroll.
Soon, Wu Wei and his companions find themselves being hunted not just by the imperial guards, but also Ruyi's betrothed and fanatic religious zealots who want the scroll destroyed. Their journey takes them through thrilling encounters, including a treacherous trek across the Gobi Desert and epic battles with their enemies.
This story is set in 1652 during the Qing dynasty in China.
