O knihe

Katharine Lee Bates (1859-1929) was a prolific American writer, college professor, scholar and social activist who published volumes of poetry, travel books, essays, children's books, and books for young adults. She is best remembered as the author of the patriotic song America the Beautiful. While on the faculty of Wellesley College in Massachusetts she mentored many young poets (including Robert Frost who was not enrolled there), and helped establish American literature as a field of college study. She shared a home with fellow Wellesley professor, Katharine Ellis Coman, and the two women often travelled together and worked together on several publications. From Gretna Green to Land's End, subtitled A Literary Journey in England, was published in book form in 1907, the project having been undertaken at the request of The Chautauquan in whose pages much of the material had previously appeared. It is illustrated with numerous photographs taken by Katharine Coman.
