"Mein skandinavisches Buch" - unter diesem Arbeitstitel plante Fontane das Werk. Er hat die Zeitungsberichte aus seiner Feder auf Blätter geklebt, in handschriftlichen Randnotizen die weitere Ausarbeitung skizziert und das Ganze zu einem Buch vereint. Noch in den 30er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts hat sein Sohn Friedrich versucht, einen Verleger dafür zu gewinnen, und nun hat Christian Andree den Plan Fontanes endlich umgesetzt. Der Fontanetext wird im Neusatz vorgelegt, doch so, dass jedem Blatt des Buches genau eine Seite im Manuskript entspricht. Damit hat Andree den idealen Mittelweg gewählt zwischen einem schwer lesbaren Faksimiledruck und einem freien Umbruch, in dem Fontanes ,Klebearbeit' und eigenhändige Bemerkungen untergehen würden. Im Unterschied zu gängigen Anthologien, die diese Texte völlig anders geordnet bereits enthalten, haben wir also eine ,Edition letzter Hand'. Vorwort und Nachwort des Herausgebers berichten über das Schicksal des Buches und beleuchten mit Hilfe zahlreicher farbiger Abbildungen die Historie und die Zeitstimmung. *************** "Mein skandinavisches Buch" was Fontane's planned working title for the book. He had pasted his own newspaper reports onto sheets, drafted further manuscript elaborations in the margins, and put everything together to form a book. In the 1930s his son Friedrich already tried to find a publisher for the work, and now Christian Andree has at last realised Fontane's plan. Fontane's text is presented in a new setting so that each leaf in the book corresponds exactly to a page in the manuscript. By this method, Andree has found an ideal middle way between a hard-to-read facsimile and a complete break with the original which would have lost all trace of Fontane's 'pasting' and handwritten notes. In contrast to the existing anthologies, which present these texts in a completely different order, we therefore have here the 'final authorised edition'. The editor's preface and afterword describe the fate of the book and, with the help of many coloured illustrations, shed new light on the history and the mood of the times.
