The shift of older people's living arrangements, from co-residence to independent living, has generated considerable scholarship in recent years. The research here builds on this scholarship by suggesting that social security reform was a major factor in explaining the rise of living alone among older people in Brazil. Furthermore, in the face of the small existing literature relating to living arrangements and the housing market, this book has taken up the challenge of filling this gap, departing from previous models that have used median rents or a perception of housing prices by using micro-data to impute housing prices based on the detailed dwelling characteristics.
