O knihe

PCB Metabolism and Human Health Outcomes. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are environmental contaminants found in human tissues in populations all over the world. They may play a role in chronic diseases and adverse reproductive outcomes, such as low birth weight and developmental delays. This book describes PCB exposure and health outcome assessments conducted within a cohort of pregnant African American women from Chicago, IL. The epidemiological study was paired with metabolism studies to elucidate the role of metabolism in health outcomes. Metabolism of several lower chlorinated PCBs by human CYP 450 enzymes was characterized. An association between PCB exposure and low birth weight was found. The impact of PCB exposure in the context of metabolism was on par with smoking, which is a known independent risk factor for a low birth weight delivery. The importance of African American race/ethnicity in CYP 450 metabolism and PCB toxicity was established. These results pave the way for future investigations of the role of metabolism in biomonitoring and environmental contaminant induced health outcomes.
