O knihe

Cockerell (1788-1863) was an English architect, archaeologist and writer. He received an education in Latin and the Classics at Westminster School from 1802 before training in the architectural practice of his father from the age of 16 and then becoming the assistant of Robert Smirke, helping in the rebuilding of Covent Garden Theatre. On 14 April 1810 he set off on a Grand Tour but as much of Europe was closed to the British due to the Napoleonic Wars he headed for Cadiz, Malta and Constantinople and then on to Greece, making discoveries in many of the ancient sites and producing copious drawings. Following Napoleon's abdication in April 1814 he was able to enter what is now Italy which he toured extensively, finally arriving back in England via Paris in June 1817, over seven years after his departure. This journal of his tour was edited by his youngest son and published in 1903.
