These men and women profiled in this book are truly unsung heroes. When Toni's father, who lived at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in the District of Columbia, told her that he drove "ducks" in WWII and also was a part of the Red Ball Express it caused her to research what he, a 90 year old man, was talking about. This journey into our mostly unrecorded or at least uncelebrated history was all that was needed to fuel her appetite for more. The stories told in this book are the little known perceptions and warm memories of residents of the AFRH and their friends. Toni and The Double Nickels Theatre Company, which she founded, have recorded, written, collected and staged these and other stories collected from the residents of the Armed Forces Retirement Home.
