You Only Need One

You Only Need One is a touching and humorous true story of a live kidney
donation between two first cousins, thirty-four years ago. Bobbie and her
cousin David were the first cousin team to successfully participate in what
was considered by the Johns Hopkins University Hospital and nationwide
medical community as an experimental yet tremendously exciting endeavor.
Their dual surgeries opened up an entirely new avenue of potential kidney
donors. Prior to 1984, there were very few live transplants, and only between
siblings or parents.

During this season of their lives, Bobbie Callaway was the owner and
principal of a successful private school in Acton, Massachusetts, a single
mother of four daughters, and a competitive golfer. Her cousin David was
vice president of a prestigious bank in Maryland, a divorced father, and a
proficient sailor, struggling with life-threatening kidney failure.

Today, there are more than 100,791 people in the United States who are
waiting for a kidney transplant! 17,107 kidney transplants were performed
last year in 2017; 11,570 were cadaver kidneys. Only 5,537 transplants
were live kidney donations, which have proven to be more successful and
long-lasting than those of unknown donors who have tragically passed away.

The diabetes epidemic in this country contributes to the growing need for
medical (and spiritual) salvation for those in renal failure. Bobbie's heartfelt
prayer is that others will be encouraged by her optimistic story to save a
