O knihe

This book presents a theoretical framework, including many practical examples, for a hermeneutic musical analysis. This new work by Joan Grimalt focuses on high-level discursive and dramaturgical aspects, and elucidates how hermeneutic analyses can be rigorous in critically examining convincing arguments or analogies for interpretive claims. The book is complimentary to Musical Signification (Springer, 2020), which gathers and synthesizes approaches to musical meaning over the last forty years, and in which the focus is on different sorts of musical signs, and possibilities of grouping them conceptually. While the approach is praxis-oriented, this new  book also proposes methodological tools that apply not only to the usual common-practice repertoire, but also to examples from recent times.

The book is divided in six chapters. After a presentation of the study’s basic theoretical scaffold, chapter one is dedicated to an integrative view on music as discourse. In the second chapter, music’s dramaturgical aspects are discussed. In the third, Topical fields, some actual cases of semantic clusters in Western art music are presented. Both final chapters are of an openly pragmatic character. In chapter four, an analytical model in five steps is offered as a methodological tool for hermeneutic analysis. The book includes a brief selection of case studies that both exemplifies the presented approach and extends its scope.
