Its name is an acronym standing for Respect, Equality, Socialism, Peace, Environmentalism, Community, and Trade Unionism. It is often referred to simply as Respect or as the Respect Party. Respect was created in January 2004, using the issue of the war in Iraq to mobilise its vote. Beyond this issue it has attempted to 'provide a broad-based and inclusive alternative to the parties of privatisation, war, and occupation' and have a broad socialist agenda.
