O knihe

Translated with an Introduction and Notes by A.J. Krailsheimer
A Simple Heart is set in the recent past in an area of Normandy familiar to the author since childhood, with characters as realistic as the scenery. Aiming to please his close friend George Sand, Flaubert wrote the story of the humble servant Felicite as `a work marked by compassion`. By contrast. Saint Julian is a medieval legend full of picturesque detail and powerful set-pieces. In Herodias, the story of Salome is reported in dramatic style, emphasizing the political, ethnic, and cultural elements of Palestine which form the background to the Bible story of John the Baptist.
Each of the tales invites comparison with one or other of Flaubert`s novels, but in their narrative concentration and intensity of focus we discover a new and distinctive side to the writer`s brilliance.
