Excerpt from Address of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the Confederate States of America, to All the Churches of Jesus Christ Throughout the Earth: Adopted Unanimously at the Organization of the General Assembly in Augusta, Ga., December, 1861

We frankly admit that the mere unconstitutionality of the proceed ings of the last Assembly is not, in itself considered, a sufficient ground of separation. It is the consequences of these proceedings which make them so offensive. It is the door which they Open for the introduction of the worst passions of human nature into the deliberations of Church Courts. The spirit of these proceedings, if allowed to prevail, would forever banish peace from the Church, and there is no reason to hope that the tide which has begun to ¿ow can soon be arrested. The two Confederacies hate each other more intensely now than they did in May.
