The Battle of Wagram (July 5-6 1809) was the most important military engagement of the War of the Fifth Coalition and took place on the Marchfeld plain, on the north bank of the Danube. An important site of the battle was the village of Deutsch-Wagram, 10 kilometres northeast of Vienna, which would give its name to the battle. The two-day struggle saw an Imperial French, German and Italian army under the command of Emperor Napoleon I defeat an army of the Austrian Empire under the command of Archduke Charles of Austria-Teschen. Following a setback at the battle of Aspern-Essling, Napoleon remained with his army on the right (southern) bank of the Danube and concentrated significant resources on the great island of Lobau, northeast of the occupied Austrian capital. Using the island as a springboard for another crossing, the French and their German and Italian allies began crossing the river to the north bank, as night fell, on July 4. During the next morning, they had successfully deployed on the Marchfeld, pushing back all Austrian opposition in the area.
