Forty years ago, German historian Reinhart Koselleck coined the notion of "asymmetrical concepts," pointing at the asymmetry between standard self-ascriptions, such as 'Hellenes' or 'Christians,' and pejorative otherizing-ascriptions, 'Barbarians' or 'Pagans,' as a powerful weapon of cultural and political domination.
