Excerpt: Each phosphate reaction that occurs in living cells is a part of phosphate metabolism. These reactions are the basis of life, allowing cells to grow and reproduce, maintain their structures, and respond to their environments. Metabolism is usually divided into two categories: catabolism which yields energy, an example being the breakdown of food in cellular respiration, and anabolism, on the other hand, uses this energy to construct components of cells such as proteins and nucleic acids. A phosphate can occur as a salt of phosphoric acid or an ester of phosphoric acid (an organophosphate). Phosphates are found pervasively in biology. Inside a cell, phosphate may be structural to a nucleic acid such as DNA, RNA or phospholipid, form high-energy ester bonds (e.g., in adenosine triphosphate), or participate in signaling.
