Yugoslavia was a statist concept among the South Slavic intelligentsia and later popular masses from the 17th to early 20th centuries that culminated in the realization of the ideal with the 1918 collapse of Habsburg Austria-Hungary at the end of World War I and the formation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. However, the kingdom was better known, colloquially as well as even on maps, as Yugoslavia; in 1929 it was formally renamed the "Kingdom of Yugoslavia".
