Excerpt: This is a list of the bird species recorded in Senegal. The avifauna of Senegal includes a total of 664 species, of which one has been introduced by humans, and eight are rare or accidental. One species listed is extirpated in Senegal, and is not included in the species count. Seven species are globally threatened. This list's taxonomic treatment (designation and sequence of orders, families, and species) and nomenclature (common and scientific names) follow the conventions of Clements's 5th edition. The family accounts at the beginning of each heading reflects this taxonomy, as do the species counts found in each family account. Introduced and accidental species are included in the total counts for Senegal. Order: Struthioniformes. Family: Struthionidae The Ostrich is a flightless bird native to Africa. It is the largest living species of bird. It is distinctive in its appearance, with a long neck and legs and the ability to run at high speeds. Order: Podicipediformes. Family: Podicipedidae Grebes are small to medium-sized diving birds. They breed on fresh water, but often visit the sea whilst migrating and in winter. They have lobed toes and are excellent swimmers and divers; however, their feet are placed far back on their bodies, making them quite ungainly on land. There are 19 species worldwide. Of these, two species have been recorded in Senegal. Order: Procellariiformes. Family: Procellariidae The procellariids are the main group of medium-sized 'true petrels', characterised by united nostrils with a medium septum, and a long outer functional primary.
