The present study is a PhD dissertation submitted to the council of College of Arts, Al-Mustansiriya University in 1996 for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Linguistics and Translation. It deals with FOREGROUNDING as one of the linguistic devices used to organize information of a text to achieve some literary effect. The study falls into five chapters. Chapter One is the introduction which covers the problem, aims, hypotheses, procedures and limit of the study. Chapter Two discusses the concept of foregrounding in English whereas Chapter Three is concerned with foregrounding in Arabic. Chapter Four deals with foregrounding in translation. Chapter Five sums up the most important conclusions arrived at.
