O knihe

This descriptive study explored the concept ofhomesickness as experienced by a sample ofadolescents at boarding school. A self-reportquestionnaire was completed by 212 respondentscomprising Grade 8 and Grade 11 boarding students atfour private schools in rural North Queensland. The findings indicated that definitions and features ofhomesickness concur with the recent researchconducted in Britain, although the overall incidenceof homesickness in this sample was higher. Anintegrative theoretical framework of identitydevelopment was used to explore environmental andindividual factors which may act as determinants increating and maintaining homesickness. Overallfindings supported this approach, with sources ofdissatisfaction with the school environment focussingon perceived lack of freedom, independence andprivacy. Although few factors revealed age or genderdifferences, individual characteristics, such as lowself-esteem, external locus of control and copingstyles, were pertinent to the very homesick. In view of the paucity of literature on homesickness, directions for future research with Australian adolescents is discussed.
