Côte d'Ivoire's economic difficulties in the 1980s, following the devaluation of the CFAF, the introduction of structural adjustment programs (SAPs), and the galloping urbanization of the city of Abidjan, were catalysts for the development of popular restaurants in Abidjan. However, poor hygiene and sanitation practices on the part of restaurateurs are making the environmental condition of popular restaurants disastrous.
