The Translator had employed a few of his leisure hours in selecting words for sacred music. He had been thus led to translate Psalms and passages from Psalms, and also to compile and adapt from other translators. The work, as it went on, became a labour of love the thought of completing and publishing a new version of the Psalter was conceived; and, having obtained the approval of his diocesan and friend, the revered Bishop Lonsdale, he published it (without adding his name) in the year 1860.

In the present Reprint considerable alterations have been made; and the Version (printed but not yet published) of the Old Testament Company of Revisers has been always carefully consulted.

The version is humbly offered as a contribution to the general psalmody of the Christian Church. On this account it has not been deemed requisite to alter every psalm partly borrowed from other sources. But it is a grateful duty to acknowledge the assistance so received.
