Lasers have been playing an increasingly significant role in oral surgery due to their numerous benefits, such as minimized bleeding, reduced swelling, minimal post-operative discomfort, and the ability to resume normal activities sooner than with a conventional scalpel surgery. The lasers makes surgery shorter, simpler and more effective. Lasers are a "new & different scalpel" (optical knife, light scalpel). The application of lasers has been recognized as an adjunctive or alternative approach in soft tissue surgeries.
