The chemistry of hypervalent compounds has received much attention both from organic and inorganic chemists and a rapid development in this area has been noted in the last 25 years. The aim of this research was the synthesis and structural characterization, in solution and in solid state, of new organobismuth compounds with ligands containing nitrogen atom(s) able to coordinate intramolecularly through N--Bi interactions, ligands designated as (C,N) or (N,C,N). General aspect of elemental bismuth and its chemistry are presented in Chapter 1. The second chapter describes structural and bonding aspects necessary to understand solution and solid state behavior of hypervalent organobismuth compounds. In the third chapter a review of all known organobismuth compounds relevant to the subject of the thesis are presented, based on searches in Cambridge Structural Database and Science Finder Database up to December 2007. The fourth and main chapter contains the original results of this work. In the last chapter, detailed experimental procedures are given. Two appendices containing experimental X-ray diffraction data and NMR spectra are given at the end of this work.
