Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, initially developed as anti-hyperglycemic drugs, have been shown to significantly improve metabolic indicators and protect the kidneys and hearts of patients with and without type 2 diabetes. The possible mechanisms for these benefits are the subject of extensive research, as they cannot be attributed solely to improved blood sugar control.
