The word comes from the Greek espe and the Latin vesper, meaning 'evening'. The term is also in limited use in some Protestant denominations to describe evening services. It is also referred to in Anglican circles as Evening Prayer. Vespers opens with the singing or chanting of the words Deus, in adiutorium meum intende. Domine, ad adiuvandum me festina. Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen. Alleluia.
