O knihe
Lipids molecules exhibit a number of strangeproperties, integral to a cell's ability toseparate self from non-self in a chemically diverseenvironment. At the mesoscopic scale, membranesexhibit mechanical effects that serve to organizelipids and proteins. In a number of case studies, the physics of elastic bilayers suggests howlipids and proteins organize in a membrane whenbilayer deformation is present. This textsystematically describes how one dissects thedeformations of a bilayer that are induced either bythe presence of membrane proteins, multiple lipidphases, or membrane vesicle adhesion. A mix of newexperimental research, as well as support from theexisting literature is used to discuss the relevanceof such elastic theories in both model membranesystems and their biological counterparts. Theseelastic theories are used to examinemembrane-mediated protein-protein interactions, morphological transitions and organization of lipiddomains, membrane adhesion, membrane crowding, andmechanosensation and osmoregulation in bacteria andmodel systems. The text and appendices fully outlineall relevant theory and experimental methods.
