Diabetes mellitus (DM) currently is a major health problem for the people of the world. It is a chronic metabolic disorder/syndrome resulting from a variable interaction of hereditary and environmental factors. Diabetes mellitus is an endocrine disorder, characterized by hyperglycemia, free radical production, abnormal insulin secretion or insulin receptor or post receptor events affecting metabolism involving carbohydrates, proteins and fats in addition to damaging liver, kidney and ß-cells of pancreas. It affects a patient's ability to control their blood glucose levels, either because their body does not produce enough insulin or because their cells do not respond to insulin i.e.insulin resistance. Insulin is the hormone that regulates the uptake of glucose from the blood into most cells, but primarily muscle and fat cells. High blood sugar produces the classic symptoms of polyuria, polydypsia, weight loss and lethargy.
