O knihe

Recent years have seen enormous interest in thenature of literacy within modern societies. Severalstudies have focused on the literacy practices ofyoung children, but detailed longitudinal work withadolescents is relatively rare. This book attemptsto understand the nature of young people's literacythrough a cultural study of the media practices of agroup of young people living in an English coastaltown. The author was the students' teacher for twoyears preceding the project and visited themperiodically over more than three years to conductsmall-group interviews. Previous studies of youngpeople's cultural practices have frequently focusedon the use of specific media forms, such astelevision or information technology, at a specificpoint in time. This work focuses on the students'use over time of a range of media, including movingimage, sound, print and ICT, arguing that theyoungsters' practices should be viewed less asdiscrete competencies than as processes ofmulti-modal literacy. It will be of interest toeducators, parents and everyone who wishes to graspthe nature of contemporary literacy.
