Viral hepatitis is liver inflammation due to a viral infection. It may be present in recent infection, relatively rapid onset (acute) or long-lasting (chronic) forms. The most common causes of viral hepatitis are the hepatotropic viruses whose primary tissue tropism is the liver. In human, at least five hepatitis viruses are named alphabetically: hepatitis A (HAV), hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), hepatitis D(HDV) and hepatitis E (HEV).
