A definite, though narrow, intermediate zone in which the B is completely attacked always precedes and separates the layer in which the attack upon the a begins from the unchanged material. It is to be expected from theoretical considerations that the rate of corrosion of pure 6 or of pure a brass IS much less than that of the 04 - 6 metal. Desch and Whyte 5 have shown that such is the case.
