The narrator is an itinerant, mostly unsuccessful writer. He's come to a strange city in hopes of gaining control. To put it precisely, his thoughts whirl and don't settle; he can't sleep and fears he can't face the weighty, unexpected, crudely grasping questions that fill the vortex he's living in.
While urging himself to say something, he endures a chaos of silence threatening a complete nervous

collapse. So at night when he can't sleep, he goes to a cafe around the corner. It's at the edge of an

area his landlord has told him to avoid, and there he meets a city detective.
The entire book is this meeting, extending over each night for about three months.
Throughout it the detective-a bizarre, demonstrative character-pours himself out, mostly about his quest for the capture of a serial murderer-rapist he's dubbed The Confessor.
But this story reinvigorates our narrator, instilling a delirium of useful material for his next book, the one we, through him, are now reading.
And as it develops, a disturbing prospect enters our consideration. lt begins to seem possible that the meeting with the detective was no accident, and our narrator in some way or other is not the innocent we originally thought he was.
