A Victorian Odyssey is a contemporaneous account of middle class Victorian English life related through the letters of Mungo Travers Park to his family in Madeira. These letters, starting in 1858, portray life as a schoolboy at Durham School, as an undergraduate at Lincoln College Oxford, then as a curate (Hewish near Weston super mare), as teacher in 3 public schools (The Forest School, Glenalmond and Sherborne School) before becoming head of Louth Grammar School and subsequently Oundle.
Mungo marries Alice Piers (the grand-daughter of the notorious seducer St John Piers) in 1872. The letters go on to relate their early married life and the birth of their first child. This book is the result of two years painstaking research by Mungo' great grandson, transcribing letters and researching the wider family tree and will be of interest to anyone researching their own family tree in the latter half of the nineteenth century.
