The English dative alternation is a prime example of persistent syntactic variation. This book investigates its emergence in the history of English in an innovative joint framework of construction grammar and evolutionary linguistics. Based on a corpus study of Middle English data and an Evolutionary Game Theory model, it argues that the phenomenon is best explained as an instance of constructional competition, cooperation, and co-evolution.
