The house upon it had been a very old farm-house of large size; but the man who had inhabited and possessed it before me had added a vulgar stucco front to it and raised a large pile of ill-built stabling just before the principal face. The old farm-buildings te mained close to the house, the farm-yard coming up to its very walls. There was no view from its windows, all the space in front being choked with timber.
