He became a cowboy on a working ranch, Texas Ranger and a member of the Tenth Texas Calvary. He was captured during the Battle of Vicksburg and escaped by jumping overboard from a steamboat taking him to the prison camp. He made his way back to Texas and started his adventures on the Texas Frontier.
