The main candidates were the incumbent Hugo Chávez, representing the United Socialist Party of Venezuela - Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV) - and Henrique Capriles Radonski, representing Justice First. The elections consisted of four more candidates from different parties but Hugo Chávez was elected for a fourth term with 54.42% of the vote, ahead of the 44.97% of his main competitor, Henrique Capriles.
