Despite the relative safety from war and monotony of stateside work, he experiences crazy senseless episodes where people are killed and military carers destroyed. He marries and his wife almost dies with the birth of their first child when he is away. He seeks retribution against a callous Red Cross official which results in persecution from senior officers.
