O knihe

Excerpt from The Medical Eclectic, Vol. 1

By Eclecticism we understand no meaningless expression, no mere negative protest, no waiving of originality, no such medley as would be likely from selecting and combining with out unity, principle, or a consistent system. From the first we have learned our lesson differently. We have been ready and desirous to perceive and apprehend the good which was in all creeds and schools, although compelled, not always without sadness and disappointment, to acknowledge that none was wholly unexceptionable. In this we have acted in the spirit of the philosophical Eclecticism of former times, which sought to eliminate from all systems their secretions of error and human invention, in order to exhibit the Divine Wisdom itself, which underlies and permeates all real knowledge. We believe with Plato, that the office of instruction is to bring such knowledge within the field of human consciousness; and to do this, the extraneous matter which mistaken men have added and interpolated, must be removed. The kingdom of heaven is like a net that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind; which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away.
