Heterocyclic compounds are cyclic compounds with ring containing carbon and other elements. The most common hetero atoms present in the ring are nitrogen, oxygen and sulphur. Commonly a, ß - unsaturated ketone is known as chalcone. The chemistry of chalcones has been recognized as the significant field of study. Chalcones are also known as benzalacetophenones, benzylidene acetophenones etc... and were first coined by Kostanecki and Tambor. Chalcones have been found to possess many biological activities. An interesting feature of chalcones is that they serve as starting material for the synthesis of various heterocyclic compounds such as pyrimidines, pyrazolines, pyridines, flavones, flavonols, flavanones, benzothiazepines, isoxazoles, aurones, benzoylcoumarones etc... as well as certain compounds like deoxybenzoins and hydantoins which are of some therapeutic importance.
