The Ethiopian highland has been cultivated for thousands of years to support the life of it's inhabitants. The highland is recently suffering serious physical and biological deterioration due to climate change, increasing human and livestock population. Unless we take urgent bio-physical restoration measures, the highland ecosystem will never be restored back and support it's inhabitants. In addition to the reclamation program action is needed to cope with climate change related shocks and population pressure. There are four mitigation options; 1) improved water and agricultural management practices 2) family planning and limiting child birth 3) change or mix the current staple food items into a high calorie per hectare crops 4) livelihood diversification to generate off-farm income. These four options need decision at government policy and individual household.
