O knihe

ESSAYS IN IDLENESS is a miscellany of aphorisms, musings and anecdotes; brief, witty and irreverent, it sketches the mundane world with urgency and humour, records the author`s search for inner truth and urges the reader to see the beauty in the transient and everyday. Its author, Yoshida Kenko .(AD c 1283-1352), was an aristocratic recluse, a Buddhist priest with Taoist leanings, engaged in his own search for the Way. A major poet of his era, he associated with emperors, warrior leaders and aesthetes. His were turbulent times, and medieval Japan was a stage for a mighty power struggle between Imperial court and military administration. Yet Kenko`s sense of the agreeable and appropriate still strikes a chord with modem Japanese. Essays in Idleness provides a window not only on to Japan in the fourteenth century, but on to attitudes in Japan today.
