Most kind and valuable assistance was also rendered to me by the Venerable Archdeacon Edwin Palmer, D.D., then one of the Delegates of the Press, not only in the shape of numerous suggestions tending to improve the substance and form of a large part of the Introduction and notes examined by him, but also by permission given to study and use' the materials collected for lectures given on these Books of the Annals during his tenure of the Corpus Professorship of Latin, which were most helpful on a number of points of scholarship throughout the volume. I deeply regret that his lamented death pre vented my receiving any additional advice from him in the present revision.
