Philosophers were divided into sects, enrolled under the banner of a schpol, or enlisted as the followers of a chief, whose name they proudly bore, whose doctrines they blindly espoused, whose volumes they consulted as oracles, in which truth alone could be discovered, neglecting its only source, the great volume of na ture. In this light were regarded Pythagoras and Zeno, Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, amongst the ancients; Descartes, Leibnitz, and Newton, of the moderns.
