¿Kate and Jackson live on a cozy farm in Louisiana with their son, Alec. Their quiet routing of chores, games, laundry, and tending to vegetables is turned upside-down when Alec finds the Llorianos, an immigrant family of three hiding in the garden.
Kate feels a sudden, strong connection to the Llorianos and insists they stay on the farm. A temporary arrangement quickly becomes permanent, with the two families blending and Alec and Reemus Lloriano becoming best friends. The idyll is abruptly shattered one night at a school Valentine's dance, with an incident of violence that leaves Jackson and the Lloriano parents dead.
