Kristijonas Donelaitis, Latin: Christian Donalitius was a Lithuanian or by others Lietuvnink or by others Prussian-Lithuanian Lutheran pastor and poet. Christian Donalitius was born on January 1, 1714, in Lasdinehlen, (Sommerswalde between 1938-1946, Lithuanian: Lazdyneliai, now Vishnevka) near Gumbinnen (now Gusev), in the north-eastern part of the Kingdom of Prussia (Lithuania Minor). The lithuanization of his name to Kristijonas Donelaitis took place many years after his death. Christian's Lutheran ancestors had come to Prussia on account of religious freedom. He wrote the first poem in the Lithuanian language, Metai (The Seasons), thus laying the foundation of Lithuanian poetry. He died on February 18, 1780, at the age of 67 and was buried under the church of Tolminkiemis.
