The department's jurisdiction covers all of Orleans Parish. The city is divided into eight police districts. The superintendent, as of November 2007 is Warren J. Riley. Riley was preceded by Eddie Compass and Richard Pennington. s of July 2007, the New Orleans police department has 1,406 officers on the force. Prior to Hurricane Katrina, the NOPD had 1,742 commissioned police officers. The NOPD is actively recruiting to increase manpower in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, which preceded an unusually high number of resignations.
