Although the buffered switch encompasses two connected queues, the connections are only at the input, so that each queue is unaffected by the operation of the other. It is true that the outputs are correlated in a nontrivial fashion, but in the networks of interest the two output streams will never feed directly to the same switch. Thus, we may immediately convert the problem to that of a single queue, with a specially designed input stream.
