Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a leader of the French Impressionists, a group of painters named for the way they dabbed bright colors on canvas, often blurring details to create a fleeting impression of the subject. In his later years, disabled by arthritis and unable to stand and paint, the artist had to be carried to his outdoor studio in a chair, and he needed help to insert a brush between his permanently curled fingers. Nothing, not even a condition that made painting so painful and difficult, could keep him from his easel. Until his final days, Renoir remained optimistic and persisted in making art that celebrated the joy of life.
